Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Yes it is :)

The musl libc base gives Alpine an advantage over most other GNU/Linux distributions: Devuan manages ~55MiB (under OpenRC) and Debian buster's systemd init pushes that up by another 10MiB or so.

Both are better than Arch though, that takes up 70MiB just at a console screen :o

Interesting! I followed your impressions regarding Alpine, musl, ksh/fish. I really find em fascinate :)
They're on my to do list, once i have a time to check them.

And if someone installs a program that has systemd as a dependency then what? On Devuan, there is no systemd in the repos, not just the live cd or initial install. Users cannot install it even accidentally.

I upgraded to beowulf and it was indeed removed:

Code: Select all

  Version table:

@anticapitalista: perhaps rebase antiX on Devuan for the next release? :D

Thanks. It's a bit pretentious but what the hell, eh? That bit of the installation is always the most difficult for me...

Obligatory XKCD link: https://xkcd.com/910/

Anyway, sysvinit was confusing the crap out of me so I've changed to OpenRC instead:

Quick question: what is the colour of the default theme for the Devuan desktop?

The Devuan forums won't let me register without answering that question and I've installed using debootstrap and built the system up from a bare console login so I have literally no idea :mrgreen:

EDIT: nevermind, it gave me some more chances and I got the question right eventually.

Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?

anticapitalista wrote:Are you sure libsystemd0 is not installed?

Ah, good catch.

I've just installed Devuan:
Code: Select all
root@shinken:~# apt policy libsystemd0
libsystemd0:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 232-25+deb9u8
  Version table:
     232-25+deb9u8 500
        500 http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii/main amd64 Packages
root@shinken:~#

It's not installed currently but that system was laid down with debootstrap and I haven't even booted it yet, I will post back with a scrot once I get the desktop up & running and we'll see if it needs to be installed for that.

EDIT: the libsystemd0 package was installed with the kernel. So it is needed then.

Are you sure libsystemd0 is not installed? Or have Devuan finally managed to get rid of it.

As I am contemplating moving to either FreeBSD or Devuan completely. FreeBSD reminds of Woody or Sarge.

Nice move, the same I would do if i get a new machine.
Instead of wondering where to X Linux distro i should go, I'm passing straight on BSD ship. Very late, but better than ever.

I Customized the most minimalistic Debian/Devuan distro, which i will take it forever as a reminder, while i will change very soon one day. I wanted to tell, you've made the right choice, wish you enjoy it, and place anything here :)

From my Obmenu:
Code: Select all
urxvt -bl -geometry 50x1-400+450 -e sudo /sbin/reboot

Code: Select all
urxvt -bl -geometry 50x1-400+450 -e sudo /sbin/poweroff

I do not hesitate to put the password once in ten days to do reboot/shutdown. Sorry, No script from me.

In system with systemd init system, you can use this little script (it work with dmenu). Just bind this script to hot-key.

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh

cmd=$(printf "poweroff\nreboot\nlock\n" | dmenu -p "Execute:" $*)

if [ -z "$cmd" ]; then
   exit 0
fi

case "$cmd" in
   poweroff)
      systemctl poweroff ;;
   reboot)
      systemctl reboot ;;
   lock)
      i3lock --color '#000000'  ;;
   *)
      printf "Option not recognized: %s\n" "$cmd" >&2
esac

Re: What does your non-Debian desktop look like?

I use
Code: Select all
# ln -s $(which systemctl) /usr/local/bin/{reboot,poweroff}

Then call `reboot` & `poweroff` from `dmenu` :)

Alternatively, try this python script:

https://gist.github.com/Head-on-a-Stick ... 4dad1b2754

^ That requires systemd though.
