When installing steam, did you read the wiki article? https://wiki.debian.org/Steam Note that you must ... steam is just a wrapper package, it will update itself to the latest version once you run it.

You really need a good stable os to run anything. I only use debian stable, nothing added, and I don't even use the non-free ... versions/distros. Get the underlying os stable, then try a stable ver of steam on it. I'm just an old guy, still trying to beat "The Ultimate Doom" ...
