gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

or try using sux gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

If you have KDE you can use sux or kdesu to open GUI apps as root.

No need to edit in a console.

Yes that was gksu synaptic.

Cool, it works. But it goes right to the app without asking for a password. That's fast but is it secure?

I thank you very much but isn't it supposed to ask for a password unless it's not timed out form last time?
