Re: My solution to gksu being deprecated/Buster.

Pointless observation and includ rant: In many ways think gnu/Linux is regressing, when it was an uber diverse sub-culture of geeks who were contributing cause they love tech, it was rich and full. Now with so much control consolidated in the hands of a few (commercial interests, like Redhat etc etc...

Re: My solution to gksu being deprecated/Buster.

Why would you do this? I purged gksu in stretch. Since stretch pkexec works fine if you set it up. pkexec is a pain to set up. I've done it and dislike it. If I was designing Debian that would be one of the first to go along with systemd ...

Re: My solution to gksu being deprecated/Buster.

... the changes ... In the end resistance is futile, the borg are consolidating their control of gnu/Nix fellas !!! :D I don't care though, I like gksu, it still works and unless I switch it out for the aforementioned lxqt-sudo (probably will) will keep using what I like. Yeah ... I think many ...

Re: My solution to gksu being deprecated/Buster.

Why would you do this? I purged gksu in stretch. Since stretch pkexec works fine if you set it up. gksu adds no functionality not otherwise available? My stretch and busters all have a root thunar, terminal, etc. No gksu. You probably need ...

My solution to gksu being deprecated/Buster.

... be discussed in this stupe thread and will probably get around to implementing it on my Debian 10 OS's as well. Ok ... I have long used and like gksu/do, however it's long been unmaintained also and found to have some security bugs as well. However Debian has removed it from the software repositories, ...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

Oops retraction: Actually do care which distro people choose. Would like to see them go with Debian proper. Those "based" on vast majority, are just Debian called something else. Maintainers choose the theme, a cool brand image, non-free all included out-of-box and they select the default ...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

Wouldn't worry overmuch about it OP. Wayland can still be a good ways off anyway. Also hoping many independent and volunteer project developers and maintainers stick to their guns and keep doing what they've always done. Which will almost assuredly include coming out with alternatives and options. I...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

In respect of file managers I think you may be SOL. Isn't the future wonderful? In respect to Debian, if it continues like this, users will start to move to other distros. Isn't the future wonderful? It's not a Debian thing, the process is being driven by the upstream developers...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

LMAO Wizard, good point. Doesn't really matter to me in a personal computing environment, though a multi-user situation it likely would. Have two Debian installs, one with (lightdm), one without and using this approach on that OS. Though thanks, now that you bring it up, may go ahead and scrub light...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

wonder how many people are running X under the root account? I can. I have not checked lately, but I did put complete root accounts on each of my 4 rolling images. The last time I check one was a basic amd64 image after upgraded to buster. There were a handful of changes and a few things no longer ...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

I had an amusing thought - wonder how many people are running X under the root account?

The only display manager I know of that runs X as an unprivileged user is GDM, and is the reason I don't use a display manager

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

... upstream. Just that it is, what it is and overall what we have to work with or around. Mentioned (and it was confirmed by Wizard10000) no reason gksu won't continue working fine in Buster, not sure what issue you're having with lxqt-sudo either. Can't fathom why there'd be any problem, in particular ...

Re: What is the replacement of kdesudo and gksu in Buster?

... not debians fault. Thunar works fine, so the issue is with the file managers not yet compliant with polkit. So, in this case, kde is the issue. gksu has been gone for awhile now. spacefm still works fine with sudo.
