Re: no root term after upgrade deb 9-10

... 9 tho I note there's no .Xauthority, instead an .ICEauthority). I did try creating the missing ~/.Xauthority file with 'touch' & copying 'gksu.desktop' over from debian 9 then rebooting but .Xauthority still remained empty-though it did get rid of error msgs & present the usual login ...

Re: Does gdebi ( the gdebi-gtk GUI) work for anybody on Bust

It turns out that in MX, our gksu calls a custom "mx-pkexec" to elevate privileges, so it seems we don't hopefully lose any security by using that workaround. I sent up a modified gdebi build to fix the problem.

Re: Does gdebi ( the gdebi-gtk GUI) work for anybody on Bust

Some MX users say that changing the /usr/share/applications/gdebi.desktop file to use "gksu" in the exec line: From Exec=gdebi-gtk %f to Exec=gksu gdebi-gtk %f fixes the crashing I really don't think that's a good idea, the GUI already has one bug that we have ...

Re: Does gdebi ( the gdebi-gtk GUI) work for anybody on Bust

Except gksu is gone? I spent some time purging gksu and revamping authority on my 4 images as I moved them to buster. The change in behavior I mentioned may have started with that purge. All 4 images have a few packages from ...

Some MX users say that changing the /usr/share/applications/gdebi.desktop file to use "gksu" in the exec line: From Exec=gdebi-gtk %f to Exec=gksu gdebi-gtk %f fixes the crashing, but you have to have a real root account for that, I think--not sure. MX gives ...

Running Dolphin from pkexec in Buster XFCE

... I've always used Dolphin as my preferred file manager. With both MATE and XFCE in Jessie and Stretch I was able to run Dolphin as root using GKSU. This is no longer possible in Buster so I've been investigating using pkexec. I know the oft quoted argument that GUIs should not be run as root ...

Re: Can't launch partitionmanager, kdesu hangs

su -c partitionmanager worked Don't do that. The gksu{,do} packages are now considered obsolete, use pkexec instead. You will have to configure polkit to allow the program to launch, something like # /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/partitionmanager.policy ...

Re: gksu deprecated

I personally never use synaptic, would never ever even touch unetbootin. I think that if this is what it comes down to then there is no problem as those can be replaced by better alternatives.

Re: gksu deprecated

Personally will just keep using gksu till it fails to work. From what I'd read about the vulnerability present in it, really isnt much of an issue anyway. As with almost everything gnu/Linux are other options too. Have installed and played ...

Re: Reinstallation Procedure

pkexec should be preferred over gksu

Some configuration may be required though, see /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/com.ubuntu.pkexec.gparted.policy (or /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.gnome.gparted.policy in buster) for an example (if gparted is installed).

Re: Single User Security

... steps through setting up only 'users', with the alternative 'wheel' group. A great example of reinventing the wheel, and calling it so! Whenever gksu came about I don't know, but it is another reinvented wheel and basically a crutch. I guess the primary purpose was to provide a user dialog to ...

Re: Single User Security

Yo. My two cents is on the fact that there are a hundred gksu references on the system(s). To avoid that, maybe everything is happening in gksu provided terminals, which is now broken. So the temptation is to simply run as root. Perhaps you can give ...
