If your computer has a soft-shutdown* button you can try pressing it a few times. That usually shuts down my computer when it stalls midway through the shutdown process (this worked both on older Ubuntus and Lenny/Squeeze broken hybrid installation, though I didn't have this problem on pure Squeeze)...

GRUB problem was solved by re-building md-raids to have md0 as RAID1 (all disks /boot). Now GRUB works like a baby ps. This is if I forget trouble given by installer when selecting "Graf. ...

I have finally managed to find a way around this; it was, after all, not related to the graphics card. It is willing too boot up when I add "noapic nolapic acpi=off" to the boot parameters in grub. I haven't tried which of them does the trick, as far as I am concerned, the problem is solved.
