December 2006 as the date for the next release of its distribution which will be named Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 alias 'etch'
Does anyone knows when they will stop giving out security updates
for sarge? ... I am still stuck with Woody.. and i am considering whether
to wait for 'etch' or use 'sarge' instead for my new server in December

At this point, and as long as Woody isn't causing you any problems, I'd recommend just waiting for Etch. There have been many improvements made to Etch over Sarge...newer kernel, better hardware detection, etc., and if you upgrade from Woody to Etch, the improvements should be even more noticable.

you are still using woody despite the fact it is no longer getting security updates?!
for a new machine at this point i'd be very very tempted to install etch and deal with a month or so of upgrade treadmill before it wen't stable. Especially as sarge and new hardware don't get on very well.
p.s. don't try to upgrade directly from woody to etch on any machine you care about, that upgrade path is not supported and is unlikely to have been well tested, upgrade to sarge first.
