What reply do you receive to the command "cdrecord -scanbus"?
What is the full command that you are giving to cdrecord to start the recording session?

I get the very same output as you when I issue the "cdrecord - scanbus" command as a user. When I issue the command as root, I get a much more detailed response. su to root, run the "cdrecord -scanbus" command again and let us know what happens.

It is possible that your computer is configured to permit only root to burn CDs.

The command that I use to burn CDs is "cdrecord dev=/dev/cdrom speed=10 -v /full_path_to/iso_name.iso". "-v" tells cdrecord to give verbose output.

I see that you command includes the phrase "-dev=/dev/hdc". The "-" might be a problem.

We are making progress. :-)

Looking around on the internet, I see that other people are having problems with this brand and model of CD burner. Here is a link to someone who may have solved the problem: http://www.linuxforum.ru/lofiversion/in ... t2165.html. If that does not help, try posting to the Debian CD-Write mailing list: http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/. I see that someone asked a similar question in July '04 -- http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/07/msg00050.html and received a very helpful response (?!?!?!) from the author of cdrecord: http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/07/msg00053.html.

Also, take a look at the CD-Recordable FAQ found at http://www.cdrfaq.org/. There is a russian translation at http://members.tripod.com/greatkorzhik/cdrfaq.htm.

if you are using kernel 2.6 then make sure that you are not using ide-scsi emulation. Check your /etc/fstab and your /boot/grub/menu.lst

Can you paste them here?

I noticed you had an error about TAO. (track at once).
Have you tried doing a burn specifing DAO(disk at once)

cdrecord -eject -dao -v dev=/dev/hdc some_iso.iso

A couple other things.
Some CD drives have errors with 80 pin cables, but work OK with the older 40 pin cables.
Does the CD drive look OK to hdparm?
# hdparm -i /dev/hdc
There may be some clue in /var/log/messages
# cat /var/log/messages | grep error
