There's a big bad beep at reboot/shutdown when using xfce4 with gdm3
There's no mod = pcspkr to remove or blacklist.
! solution = xset -b or (echo (setterm -blength 0) &| (set bell-style none) >> profile)
No alsa setting
[cntl][alt]f1 > gdm stop >reboot gives no beep
Using lightdm removes beep
gnome with GDM3 no beep
Can't see any compelling reason not to use lightdm. Simply an academic question; has anyone encountered/solved this not using any method within the first 750 google hits?

You have to turn off system beep in the ALSA mixer. It's part of ALSA.
But why would you want to do that? The system beep is like... man it just brings back fond memories of my old 286 with 4mb or ram run DOS 5 back in the day. I remember, I'd put a big floppy in and that that system beep would just ring through the house, man. Good times.

Actually, I like the beep too, but the dog goes nuts when it fires. (Something to do with bo peep's sheep.)
Using lightdm instead of GDM3 is a fix I am pretty happy with.
With alsa completely muted, beep and all, it still beeps with xfce/gdm3. None of the two dozen or so work-arounds worked around.
BTW: No other machine I work with has this quirk. There is a Dell error code on the E6500. One beep means; call service. Damed if I gonna do that.

Neither can I. Unless there is a very good reason for using gdm3, lightdm seems like a much better choice for a new Debian+Xfce system. Did you do a fresh installation, or upgrade from Squeeze to Wheezy?bettylou wrote: Can't see any compelling reason not to use lightdm.
