Home Server (Laptop) running hot (78-80 C)

#1 Post by goose »

Hey folks,

I've got an HP laptop I installed Wheezy on that's been running hot. Sensors reports 78-80 C, and my fan is pretty much running at 100% full time after 3 or 4 minutes of being booted. It's a software issue, as when the laptop is booted in Windows it doesn't reproduce the issue.

I have no idea where to start trying to troubleshoot this issue.

Running htop in a terminal will show what processes are using the cpu.

Your htop screenshot is just a snapshot in time showing zero CPU utilization. You'll need to monitor it for a while to identify any culprit.

Edit: Not sure if htop is similar to top, but in top pressing shift-P will sort processes according to CPU usage. Man htop for more details.

800mhz, 512mb ram, dCore-jessie (Tiny Core with Debian Jessie packages) with BusyBox and Fluxbox.
Most don't have computer access, reuse or pay forward an old computer.

I've been monitoring it for about 20 minutes, temp remains at 78-80 and no spikes in CPU or RAM usage, that's been my average load for the last 20 minutes.

What is the CPU? Some of the more recent processors need the newer kernel from backports to enable cpu scaling (slowing or halting the CPU when when it's not under load). I know the AMD APU in my laptop has the same issue with the 3.2 kernel, and only runs at top speed fulltime with that kernel.

You can run "cpufreq-info" in the terminal to check your cpu scaling status.
