strange network behavior with wheezy

#1 Post by titou »

hi everyone

my installation :
debian linux 7 stable wheezy
kernel version
3.2.0-4-amd64

kde platform version 4.8.4

dual core 3.2, 2 gig ram and plenty of hd space

I was trying to configure shared with samba when I noticed nmbd was not working.
then I tried from console to start it. no error message.
then I ps -A | grep nmbd ... nothing :(

so I google'd the problem and found there is a bug with samba shipping with wheezy.
so no samba installation on my new server... apt-get remove samba

then I tried Dolphin... with the network option at the left side and <samba share>
I could see all my shared on my win7 WS ?~? f....k

what is going on here ?
please give me a hint so I'll google it
thanks

So what exactly is the problem?

SMB client != SMB server.
i.e you don't need to install the samba package if you just want to connect to a share.

BTW samba (both clients and servers) are working fine on my wheezies.

Thanks dilberts_left_nut

That's a partial answer to me. but I asked a partial question. :)

I forgot to include the rest of the email. sorry.
(it was 2am when I posted)

My question is :

I've tested a lot of distro during the last years 20 years and
when It comes to samba and windows, at least for me, it's pain in...
my setup is wheezy and windows 7 32b.
and
from kde, in dolphin, if I try to access windows shared, it keeps asking
me userid and passwd (in a loop).
username and password is the same from win7 and wheezy.

What is the problem here ?

Ps: For my problem with samba server and wheezy.

nmbd dont start at boot.
then trying to start manually, no error message
but ps -A | grep nmb return nothing.

removed samba and reinstall and again no joy, same problem.
someone suggested to downgrade samba... not in my agenda really.

at last, I don't mind, I dont need a samba server running on my
webserver...

Check your sharing settings in Win 7- MS keeps moving the goalposts with the SMB protocol.
"Homegroup" should be turned off and "user/password" sharing turned on.

Also look at the error messages in Event Viewer for further clues.

I see that the big problem is always MS ...
Problem solved Thanks !!!

Desactivate Homegroup
and modify directory permission in MS
that's it ...
