ffmpeg

How do I convert an ovg to avi file?

Why was ffmpeg removed in Jessie, and can we please have it back?

I read through more of this thread than I wanted to.
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=763148

Can someone explain what is going on? Does libav provide command line utilities to do something like converting ovg to avi, or determining the length of an mp3 file? Why is there absolutely no explanation as to why libav was preferred over ffmeg?

I found libav-tools provides avconv, which does the ogv-avi conversion.

ffmpeg was dropped because of politics afaik. There are moves to bring it back -

Yes, it's back upstream. There's also a 2.8.1 backport to a Jessie base in the MX 15 repositories (we are now to the public beta stage for 15) You could try deb-multimedia for a "real" ffmpeg also, but it may make some applications a pain to install. So far the MX 15 version avoids that by using renamed *-ffmpeg package versions.

VLC may also be able to handle an ogv-2-avi conversion, among many others. WinFF?

I forgot to mention a good, simple solution, which is to download the static ffmpeg executable and use it.

There are plenty of discussions about the situation, but you would have to do a websearch or actually use the Debian wiki.

Update--an even better solution: ffmpeg 2.8.1 has been in jessie-backports for roughly a month now.

+1
Of course it helps to spell right, when doing searches ,
There does seem to be a lot on this: ""On a Debian system why libav was preferred over ffmpeg?""
On a Debian system why libav was preferred over ffmpeg?

https://wiki.debian.org/Debate/libav-provider/ffmpeg

And like Stevepusser says, it sounds like they have decided that actually FFMPEG , will be "prefered" .
