LyX broken?

On jessie, lyx (2.1.2-2) appears to be broken. When starting up it complains that a "text class can not be found" and offers an option to "reconfigure", but the "reconfigure" also fails.

I do have latex installed, a full install of texlive.

I have used lyx on debian succesfully in the past. Just wondering if anyone else uses it much and has seen these issues?

If I were you, I would search with the error messages first on web. If I could not find any useful info on web, I would search on bug reports concerning lyx.
Without detail info on your debian system, further help may be difficult. You had better consult package maintainer than asking here.

Thanks. Trouble is the same problem occurs with the Windows lyx installer - so web results are swamped by that topic. I'll try the package maintainer.

It doesn't look broken in "jessie", at least not on my system.
Could it be that a dependency got removed when installing some other package?
So you can compare. Do you have all the packages I have?

Have you tried removing the hidden file .lyx from your home directory (after backing it up first of course) and restarting the program?

Good idea to run it from the terminal. Something is obviously up with my system as I get:

Any luck?
The only other thing that occurs to me is that you might've installed some extraneous package from a third-party source that breaks LyX if the invoked program isn't in fact missing as your teminal output states.

I have had the same problem and it seems as if it has got something to do with the rights. After I had wiped any lyx configuration files ( ~/.lyx and ~/.config/LYX ) and freshly installed lyx I had the problem that lyx could not find /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/article.cls when I opened lyx as a normal user. The Title and Section menu entries in lyx where greyed out. When I opened lys as administrator/root it worked without any problems. Also the warnings about missing style files etc. disappeared. The strange thing is that after calling lyx a second time as normal user it worked again and showed all entries ?!
