[Solved]Recommended software for technical blog?
[Solved]Recommended software for technical blog?
I really like the software used to run this forum because, among other things, it's so good for displaying code. For some time I've been looking for something similar to phpBB — not for a forum — but for a technical blog which is good for displaying code. Can anyone recommend something instead of drupal7 or wordpress? Thanks

DebianStable
Code: Select all
$ vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Re: Recommended software for technical blog?
I don't think I would recommend any "blog" software, but to be honest.
I don't know much about that.
SMF, is also php based, and "FLUXBB",
You don't have to set them up as a full forum, with all sorts of categories or "sub-forums", just 1 forum/category , and sticky
the first post or "main commentary".
PHPbb, as far as I know , is the only one in the Debian repos,
I like it because it is very versatile, and "customizable",.....

Re: Recommended software for technical blog?
There is this ,
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/pyth ... on-pelican
I was not aware of it, because it is not available for Debian 7 wheezy,
They are using it here:
https://bits.debian.org/
https://bits.debian.org/pages/about.html
some time ago,.....I had forgotten about that.

It also was mentioned here: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 91#p621893This blog is powered by Pelican. You can find the templates and theme used on this blog at git.debian.org. Patches, new themes proposals and constructive suggestions are welcome!

Re: Recommended software for technical blog?
Displaying code properly has more to do with presentation (aka the specific theme style one chooses, the html+css basically) than with the actual blogging/forum software.kedaha wrote:I really like the software used to run this forum because, among other things, it's so good for displaying code. My suggestion to you would be to explain in far more details what kind of specific needs you do have and, for instance, why the two options you mentioned do not work for you.
That could help a lot in narrowing down the list.
Otherwise you're probably just going to get people's favorites, regardless of whether they are what you're looking for or not.
And if a list of blogging software is what you seek, I'm sure you know very well how to extract it from the interwebz.
That said, not my favorite (I don't have one) and I haven't checked it in at at least 7-8 years, but just to mention one that hasn't been mentioned, check b2evolution (used to be in the repos).
Bye

Thanks for all your comments.
I was interested to know your thoughts about this topic and I've decided that the best software is for my purposes is in fact phpbb.
The other programs look very useful too.
My main reason for using this kind of software is to have somewhere to leave some of my notes, including code, i.e., those which are not suitable for forum topics here and in some cases to invite readers' comments which may also include code which can be cut and pasted without giving rise, for example, to mysql syntax errors.

kedaha: A bit of a wild-card here but I think you might like to take a look at ELOG.
ELOG is a "Logbook system to manage notes through a Web interface" that is, IMHO, best suited for use on a LAN with a limited number of users. I am not sure if it is possible (or even desirable!) to open it up to the internet but I don't know if this is one of your requirements.
It's in the Debian repos.

Excellent. I'd never heard of it. Thanks a lot.Zill wrote:kedaha: A bit of a wild-card here but I think you might like to take a look at ELOG.

Re: Recommended software for technical blog?
In my opinion markdown is something that might make sense in your situation. This is because writing it is as simple as writing any text, meaning that anyone can learn it, yet it allows to display all kind of things, formatted text, equations, images, foreign fonts. Many academics even use it to write entire papers (e.g Pandoc an extended markdown). Try do that with phpBB or php for that matter...
Commonly used blog software that allow you to host sites that have all the things that you need. include https://jekyllrb.com/ and https://hexo.io/
Here is an example of a coder from Indonesia that made a blog using hexo.io and put it online (you could also only have it on a private network):
https://sarwadadi.github.io/2016/09/Car ... 16-04.html
But have a look at their own sites, where they give examples of other themes and ways to do it. I only put that here because it is more that "traditional blog" type of layout.

You can even transfer your blog online and host it on github with Jekyll for example. I use git for version control on every single text that I write. It is a really good idea.
Here is a post by a guy about blogging that you might find interesting, given that the guy was in a similar situation and tried a lot of things:

I already knew a lot about what I didn’t want. I was tired of complicated blogging engines like WordPress and Mephisto. I wanted to write great posts, not style a zillion template pages, moderate comments all day long, and constantly lag behind the latest software release

@pylkko
Thanks so much for your reply which is most helpful; one of the things I was least familiar with is blog software; I now have plenty on my plate so I'm marking the topic "solved."
I'm particularly impressed by hexo. Thanks for the links.
