Hi,
Is it possible/advisable to install GTK2+ on my Stretch box which already has GTK3+ installed?
Cheers
John

Re: Can GTK2+ and GTK3+ exist together?
Is there some reason you could not just do a search ?
Can GTK2 and GTK3 exist together?
The first hit says they can :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/817561/c ... k3-coexist
If you read the other results as well, you will see that others disagree,
also, in the results there is something about GTK2 not being safe or advisable to use,
I don't understand why you don't do some searches, and then try to decide it is
a good idea,....
You do not mention what version of Debian you are using, ...but for Debian
it is not a good idea to be "mixing" packages from various versions,

I always have both toolkits installed, never have any problems with it (that I can notice).

Hi Garry,
Surprisingly that was one of the first things that I did, my search string was: can gtk 2 and gtk3 exist together debian stretch along with other variants and did not find a suitable answer.
As to the version of Debian I am using I did have in my post 'on my Stretch box'.

I missed that, sorry, and it does not hurt to get 2nd opinions on whatI did have in my post 'on my Stretch box'.
you may have found in searches, sometimes the results vary, and are not
all ways reliable,.

with, like, 99% probability both toolkits are already installed ootb.johna1954 wrote:Is it possible/advisable to install GTK2+ on my Stretch box which already has GTK3+ installed?

Debian package management and dependency resolution is quite sensible. If you try to install incompatible packages, the tools will warn you - generally insisting on uninstalling anything that conflicts - and asking for confirmation. Simply say no to preserve your system.
Or use a simulation:
and the output will let you know about conflicts without making any changes to your system.
Or use a simulation:
Code: Select all
apt-get --simulate install QUESTIONABLE-PACKAGE
