Typing in multiple languages

Postby sucablyat » 2017-03-05 11:38

Hi all,

I am very new to Debian (jessie, xfce desktop). I have been looking around on the internet for answers to the following problem, but I cannot seem to find a proper one.
I would like to be able to type in:
English, Russian, Greek, Arabic (, optionally Korean) and Chinese (simplified).

Using
Code: Select all
setxkbmap us,el,ru,ar -option -option compose:lwin -option grp:alt_shift_toggle
I am able to type in the first four languages, using
Code: Select all
alt+shift
to toggle.
How can I include Asian languages such as Chinese and Korean?

I have tried installing ibus with its components (https://wiki.debian.org/I18n/ibus,http://chinese.stackexchange.com/questions/14125/can-i-type-pinyin-in-debian-linux) but that doesn't seem to work properly.

Any tips would be appreciated a lot!

Thanks for the reply, but I think the problem/issue is that for Chinese, I don't need a different keyboard layout, but rather the way the keys of the keyboard are interpreted/processed.
The method with ibus doesn't seem to work though.

I have not used Ibus for a few years, but it is great with East Asian languages. It has several Chinese input methods, but each desired input method must be installed. Also, they use different phonetic systems, so you will need to install the one or few input systems that use phonetic systems you know.
