indicator-cpufreq not shown in applet tray

#1 Post by bocao »

Hi,
I recently migrated from Ubuntu to Debian. I really like how indicator-cpufreq works and installed it in Debian 8.7 64bits using Cinnamon desktop following instruction from http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=113449

Installation (apparently) worked; if I call 'indicator-cpufreq' either in a terminal or just using alt+f2, the applet icon appears in the system tray and works as expected. Then, two issues have been in place:

(1) Applet icon is *only* shown in the tray if I call it using one of the methods mentioned above although it is set to load at startup.

(2) Applet icon is shown having a weird red (purple?) box around it.

How can I set to properly indicator-cpufreq load (and show up) at the tray at startup without this weird contour?

Thanks!

Let's see, you install Debian Jessie (Debian 8, current stable) with the Cinnamon desktop then you follow instructions for installing an Ubuntu package on Debian Wheezy (Debian 7, previous stable version) with Xfce desktop but you do it on your Jessie install and things don't work out. What could be the problem?

Have you read and understood this?

I ported over the Ubuntu version from Trusty and rebuilt the package on Jessie. I don't run Cinnamon, and can't see any problems in the XFCE panel with it. It works fine for me there, so if my rebuild still has the same issue, I'd guess it's related to Cinnamon, and search to see anyone else on Mint or Ubuntu has the same problem.

Edit: a few seconds search showed that getting it to autostart in Mint Cinnamon is a known issue with a known workaround. You should be able to find it easily.

Thorny, thanks for the link.

stevepusser, thanks for sharing your package and suggestions. Just for the sake of clarity: Yes, it seems to be a Cinnamon-related problem. Installing indicator-cpufreq in Jessie does work and indicator-cpufreq also works as expected. The issue I experience is just about the lack of the applet icon in the tray to control cpu frequency when using Cinnamon desktop. Icon shows up in Cinnamon if I call it in the terminal (or using alt+f2 for a command). If I use Mate, LXDE, XFCE or KDE, indicator-cpufreq icon does show up in the tray as soon as I log in.
