Troubleshooting T530 laptop waking up

#1 Post by yuastnav »

Hey guys,

does anyone know how I can troubleshoot my Lenovo T530 waking up? Man, if I had known four years ago that there is system76 making Linux laptops I wouldn't have bothered with Lenovo, given how much trouble I've had with this machine. Most things work more or less. But a problem that still occurs (besides external monitors not working due to optimus) is that it wakes up sometimes after suspending it to RAM.

The thing is that it happens just sometimes. I can boot up my laptop and put it to sleep a couple of times and then shut it down, all without problems. Sometimes though when I put it to sleep it immediately wakes up, no matter whether I just close the lid or press the corresponding keys or enter the commands. And it does that until I reboot it.

Unfortunately I don't really know where to start looking. What logs and what not do I have to look at to troubleshoot the problem?

My first thoughts would be to check the BIOS settings.

Is there something specific that I have to look for?
Like I said, sometimes it works just fine! I start the thing up, suspend and wake it up a couple of times and then shut it down. Everything works flawlessly.

I just haven't been able to figure out whether it's something that I do specifically or whether the system does something on its own that makes it wake up on its own immediately after suspending the machine. That's why I am unable to reproduce this behaviour and need to be able to troubleshoot it when it happens.

There should be some power settings in the BIOS, and there may be several options for waking the computer. Most computers I've seen have these options disabled, but you may have one enabled.

Do you use an ethernet cable for anything? If so, it may be set to wake from LAN.

I have looked at my BIOS settings and the only option that I have found was "wake from LAN". It was enabled. I have enabled it to test whether it will work. However, the issue that this machine keeps waking up also happens even if I'm not on an ethernet connection and/or when my eth0 device is disabled and I'm on a wifi connection.

What's version of Debian are you running, and if it's Jessie, did you have to install anything from backports to get it running well?

You could install inxi and provide the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F
if you would like to give us a pretty good look at your current software situation.

This happened with Jessie and it's also happening with stretch.
I don't quite remember but I don't think I had to install anything from backports to get it running.

Unfortunately, the same issue just happened again.

This is what dmesg has to say about this issue:
