What's the user for web services? daemon??

#1 Post by quixote »

I'm trying to set up owncloud to transfer files from an iphone to a laptop. I followed a web site that blithely said to use 777 perms everywhere. Well, everything works when I do that, but if I'm going to use it I'd like to have better permissions in place.

Owncloud provides a script where it says to substitute your own http user and group. My system says "daemon(1)/1" is the http user.

I can't believe that. Daemon, sure, but what's the (1)/1 about?

Should I use daemon? Seems like an awfully fundamental account to be using for that. Normally apache under debian uses www-data, I think? Could I use that instead?

I tried asking these questions over at the owncloud forums, but I'm getting the impression they don't know the answers.
