Unstable Distro

#1 Post by jozephbrasil »

Hi guys,

I am trying to update my Debian disto, but I have a machine corrupted.

For some reason after an apt-get update I got packages: google-compute-engine-init-jessie and google-compute-engine-jessie removed and now when I try to reinstall it I get:

apt-get install google-compute-engine-init-jessie google-compute-engine-jessie google-compute-engine

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

Depends: python3-google-compute-engine (= 2.7.1-1) but it is not going to be installed
Conflicts: google-compute-engine-init-jessie but 2.1.3-0.1503598199 is to be installed
Conflicts: google-compute-engine-jessie but 2.5.2-0.1502923259 is to be installed
google-compute-engine-init-jessie : Depends: google-config-jessie but it is not going to be installed

Everything begins when I tried to install apt-get install certbot without success!

Anyone knows how to fix these issues?

Unstable is not a distro.

Get away from the Debian terms for a moment and think of RC (Release Candidate), Beta Version and Alpha Version. The Debian RC and the distro is Debian Stable. Testing equates with Beta (less buggy than Alpha) and Unstable with Alpha (most buggy). A minority of people successfully use Unstable because they are very careful, know what they are doing and can get out of problems.

Your messages say "E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.". Have you tried the command to fix broken packages?

Sigh...you don't even let us know what version of Debian you are running. That could be at the root of the issue, but as a volunteer like everyone else here, it's hard to work up any enthusiasm to help when we know we'll have to waste time trying to pry out even basic information.

Anyway, install inxi and give us the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -F

inxi -r
to provide system and repository information.

i don't think that debian ships with any package that starts with "google...", so something MUST be fishy.

There is no python-acme that's in Jessie, it's from the jessie-backports repository you have left enabled, contrary to their recommendations. https://packages.debian.org/jessie-back ... ython-acme

You also have add some extra special sauce to the install command for packages from backports; please see the instructions at backports.org.

What is with the smiley face in the output ?
That is why we have code boxes, please use them :

Keep these:

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main
Get rid of everything else.

If that doesn't help, consider that the Google stuff messed up your system and do a fresh install.

the thread should be titled "cannot install certbot/letsencrypt on debian jessie".

i wonder if those google cloud repos have something to do with the problem, they aren't mentioned anywhere in https://wiki.debian.org/LetsEncrypt

btw, in case the debian wiki instructions aren't sufficient, there's plenty more:
https://duckduckgo.com/html?q=install%2 ... n%20jessie
