Re: Data recovery
First off, you will need to inform us what drives and partitions are available on your system. Preferably through a command like lsblk.tungdo wrote:I've been trying to discover how can I recover data from a hard drive that as been previously configured with LVM, although not encrypted, but I have been having mixed results. I've been using LVM more and more lately to configure hard drives and my greatest fear is to have a motherboard fail on me and get locked out of the contents.
Can someone give me a few pointers on this topic?
LVM devices are seen differently to normal block devices. They normally fall under "/dev/mapper/<LVM-DEVICE-NAME>"
If you are booting under a live medium, you will need to mount the LVM volume to see the logical partitions... Or you will only see 1 partition.

Re: Data recovery
Ok, I have successfully mounted a LVM volume from a live medium.
An external device will need to have lvm2 tools installed.
This can be done by a computer that has the tools installed on a laptop you want to connect the drive to or a live medium. Bear in mind that with the live medium, you will likely need to add Debians repos into your sources (That was what I had to do).
My example uses a live medium.
What I did was:
#Download a live ISO and burn/copy it to a bootable media.
#boot into a Debian live medium.
#If you get a password prompt, the password is live.
#open a terminal and switch to root.
#Check your partitions and recognise what partition the LVM volume is on.
#For me, my LVM volume is on /dev/sda5.
#Add Debian's sources to sources.list and update.
#Update and Install lvm2.
#Run lvscan to check if it sees your logical volumes.
#It should see your logical volumes, but they are inactive.
#So we run vgscan, it should find your volume group. Mine is named vg.
#Now we can activate our logical volumes with vgchange -ay.
#Now if we do lvscan, they should be now active.
#Now if we look at our block devices again, your LVM volumes should be recognised.
#Now we can mount the volumes that you want to get data off using mount.
#Now I can browse my home directory from that system, as you can see. I have a data user account.
#An example file.
I hope this helps.
