Misterious process "file.so" (?)

Postby OrionB » 2018-05-02 15:40

Hello,

I was working on my PC and its fan started to rotate at its maximum speed. I wasn't really using my CPU so I've checked the processes in top. There was one process called "file.so" and another which name was approximatively the same. It was impossible, even in root to kill that process.
I've rebooted my PC and the process was still running, with 4 instances but it was not using the CPU more than 3%
Someone knows what is that process, is it trivial or do I have to worry ?

Thank you,
Orionb

Some desktop environments or other programs have processes that they will run on their own that'll eat a lot of CPU for a time, such as file indexers.

But since you haven't provided any information about your setup at all, that's I can guess for now.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: GIMP 2.10, Pale Moon 27.9.1, Enlightenment 0.22, Calligra 3.1, VLC 3.0.2, Firefox 60.0, Krita 4.0.3

Just a wild stab in the dark, the "file" may be generic referring to any file.so such as libflashplayer.so. Run
Code: Select all
~$ locate *.so
to see what you have. Some may actually end in file.so.
