Missing libqt5core.so.5

If none of the more specific forums is the right place to ask

You shouldn't have any Qt files in /usr/lib at all. Since it's multiarch, you should have a symlink in the subfolder for your arch, such as

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5

which is a symlink to

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5.10

which in turn is a symlink to

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5.10.1

Both /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5 and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5.10 are set as symlinks to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5.10.1

Should I change ...5 to point to 5.10?

I backed things up, tried repointing these symlinks and then switched them back as it made no difference. Anybody have any other suggestions?

If it's a systemic problem, you wouldn't be able to run any Qt 5 apps at all...such as VLC. Is that the case?

Right. VLC will not run, nor Brewtarget, nor Beersmith, nor qbittorrent

I have exactly the same issue. I installed sid years ago and did not perform any manual changes except occasional apt upgrades. Suddenly, all qt applications fail to run.
Has anyone found a workaround or reason?

It may not be the same issue. OP is running testing and you are running unstable. Unstable recently transitioned to Qt 5.11 whereas testing still has 5.10 currently. The transition took quite a few days so if you did an upgrade in those few days you may have broken it.
I'm running Plasma 5 so if Qt was broken here I would have no desktop. I held off on upgrades till transition was completed and now have Qt 5.11 running with no issues.

You are right. Qt 5.11 is installed on my machine. Symptoms are the same, though.
