A standalone QT Frontend for SoX in SourceForge?

#2 Post by bkpsusmitaa »

I tried to run the application from my system, but the binary won't run.
I checked my system with

Code: Select all

qmake --version
My system says:

Code: Select all

QMake version 2.01a
Using Qt version 4.8.2 in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
The Readme.txt of QSox says:
INSTALLATION
==========================
Requirements for Linux : install SoX with "apt-get install sox"
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Just launch the executable.
Which is crazy.
From my terminal in the directory of SoX I checked to see the rwx option active. I tried running the command directly from the downloaded directory, but won't run. I copied it to /usr/sbin, but it won't run from there too.

Code: Select all

QSox

Code: Select all

bash: /usr/sbin/QSox: cannot execute binary file
Also,

Code: Select all

 QSox
bash: /usr/bin/QSox: cannot execute binary file
I have been searching for a GUI version for SoX as the man page and application for SoX via the CUI is something beyond my abilities. Entering Computing in the era of Win3.11 I could never push myself hard enough to work from CLI. I missed out a lot on utilising the power of UNIX as a result.
I found that a better initiation to the man page for SoX could be via this page: Using Sox
The QT version for SoX could be downloaded from here:
QSox
A batch-oriented frontend for SoX with Qt.

Dear fellow Debian users,
I also had sent an email to the pkg-multimedia-maintainers on the same issue, and I wish to share the news that my post was accepted and could be accessed from this link: Request for porting qsox, a QT version of SoX in sourceforge

Sirs,
Thank you for empowering us with the wonderful application SoX. The
only issue I had with it was its CLI interface.
(...)
Entering computing in an era of the GUI I could not push myself to CLI
based applications. It is solely my problem and I apologise for the
same.
But I am afraid that there are individuals like me who would be
deprived of the power of this wonderful application called SoX.
I have observed that there is a QT GUI version of SoX available in
SourceForge here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/qsox/
I hope that we would be able to have this QT GUI version of SoX as a
stand-alone application in the future editions of Debian.
Thank you sirs, for lending me your ears.
Regards,
Rajib B

Audacity is a gui application which uses the sox library. AFAIK, it is stable, well supported, and reasonably well documented. It is available in the Debian Stretch repositories. Maybe give that a try.

Does it? I have been using Audacity for the last 10 years. Extensively. Didn't know. Thank you for the information. Any references, please?
But sox is really so lightweight! The CPU and memory usages were very low. I regularly use it to generate multiple noise files just like a snap in the CLI! And play some songs in the background. It felt so nice!

I know almost nothing about Audacity. I know almost nothing about sox. But I saw this: https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Libsoxr Probably just another case of sticking my nose in a forum conversation where it doesn't belong.

Doesn't matter.

Yes!
From the above Audacity Libsoxr Link wrote: ... Audacity 2.0.3 added libsoxr support and made it the default resampling library ...
Thanks.

Please do continue to stick it. Helps. Really. :D
I have posted a message for the List, debian-multimedia: Multimedia support and applications, with the following addition:
... While from my interactions in the Debian Forums I now know that
Audacity uses sox's libraries, sox is far lightweight in comparison to
audacity. Although I marked my query as resolved, my request for a GUI
version of sox remains ...

^ you called them "Sirs" again!
Are you aware that
a) this is sexist, because it assumes a male sex. there's many women around in Linux communities, you probably usually don't even realize that because they don't call themselves "LinuxGirl" or some such crap.
b) even those that are decidedly male do not care being called like that, at least not in the FOSS community
bkpsusmitaa wrote:But sox is really so lightweight! The CPU and memory usages were very low.
and what do you think would happen to that lightweightness when you build a full-featured gui around that...
