Debian is randomly freezing after upraded from Jessie

#1 Post by SoliCase »

Hello everyone!
Since I 've upgraded from Debian Jessie to Debian stretch I am experiencing random hard freezes. More particularly my computer 2-3 times per day is getting freezed and it does not accept any input as well as any ssh session and has to be manually hard-reset. The Kernel crashes are striking when I work and always having firefox (60-esr/62/beta) running.
/var/log/messages, journalctl and .xsession-error not give any helpful information. I am also monitoring cpu usage, temperature and ram usage every 15 seconds but it does not seem that the laptop is stretched in order to strike the kernel crash. There are many times that the Kernel crashed when I using the trackpad. For example, the system is freezing when I am clicking or moving the trackpad
I tried various kernels including the one I am running now 4.18 from backports but none of them solved the problem.

I've tried also so far without luck:
I upgraded the Bios with the latest firmware
I switched off the swap
I disabled apparmor.
Switching from libinput10 to synaptics.
installing graphic drivers for i915 xserver-xorg-video-intel.
I set up coredump and I am booting crashkernel but no catches.
Upgrading systemd packages from backports as well as upgrading individual packages from testing
Creating new profile for Firefox and refreshing browser.

My laptop is Lenovo G50-80 4GB ram 6GB swap using Xfce4.
Thanks for reading this post. I appreciate any help or tip that will drive me to the right direction of solving the issue.

Edit: I also tried running memtest overnight and GSsmart control without giving any errors

I'm surprised the machine even ran jessie, using testing pkgs on stretch would probably not be the best idea.

Probably FF. That's "normal" for FF here
May the FORK be with you!

I tested several packages such as Crash (it has a bug in stretch) and xserver-xorg-input-libinput. At the time of the snapshot, Firefox-esr and gnome terminal were been used.

Well using libinput from testing and then having problems/crash when using trackpad is a pretty good clue. If you had random freeze before, then I think you might have made it worse. Now there's two things to figure out.

51C might be a little hot for a machine that's been up a half hour, is there no fan?

top can sort the memory offendors, maybe that will help people. Since it's a mixed system, they'll probably want sources.list and apt policy too.

I am pasting the requested output. There is fan working OK as far I can understand. During my tests, the temperature at the time of the crash is not greater that 50-60.
I have this freezes from the time that I upgraded. The reason I decided to test testing packages is that I have a little clue that it might be related to the input. At this time, libinput from testing works the same as the stable package works

Re: Debian is randomly freezing after upraded from Jessie

#7 Post by GarryRicketson »

I guess it probably has nothing to do with it, but then again, maybe it does:
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
The reason things can break is because the software packaged for one Debian release is built to be compatible with the rest of the software for that release. For example, installing packages from buster on a stretch system could also install newer versions of core libraries including libc6. This results in a system that is not testing or stable but a broken mix of the two.

Repositories that can create a FrankenDebian if used with Debian Stable:

Debian testing release (currently buster)
And what about the /etc/apt/sources.list.d , as well as the /etc/apt/sources.list Are their any additional sources ?

No these are no additional repositories I am afraid.

Since the memory use is mostly from buff/cache I'd say that looks pretty normal. I do have firefox-esr 60.x running about 8-9% of RAM and about 2-8% cpu on a 4gb stretch system though, with a much weaker cpu (Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz) temp runs about 22C. Does the machine ever freeze when ff is not running? Does the temp remain lower when ff is not running?
Were you running a mixed system before the upgrade? Have you thought about trying a stretch live system to test it?

Once you cross the line mixing sources, it's really hard to go back. It can take awhile to figure out that you can't go back to a stable system. I really don't have any experience dealing with it.

I have experienced problems with firefox-esr on stretch, but that was on a clean stretch system with no foreign sources.

Your /etc/apt/preferences file is bullshit, remove it and try a dist-upgrade with clean stretch repositories and nothing else.

If it was my system I would either restore it to a point before the pinning was messed around or re-install from scratch.

Re: Debian is randomly freezing after upraded from Jessie

The system was CLEAN and upgraded from Jessie to Stretch when the freezing issue started. There were no mixed sources or testing packages installed. I explained why I tested 2 specific packages in order to help me finding the root of the problem, as I had no other evidences, and tried to push the problem away and I don't really understand why the comments are so agressive regarding mixing distribution. Debian mainteners should release more often packages from testing to backports in order debian to be more user friendly. For example if i want to use the Crash package to debug a crash I had to upgrade from testing as the stretch's is identified as buggy. I am aware that Debian does not want to mixing sources but sometimes is necessary.
At the time of writting this comment I experienced two hard freezes however my system has NONE package at the moment from the testing source as I kept track of what did I install and it's dependencies and I revert it back to the clean stretch dist.

For me, as long as there are no log traces I suspect that the issue lays in Xorg itself or in XFCE4 but I don't know how to debug it. I don't want yet to switch to a different system or a clean stretch install admittedly I want to dig more into finding the solution to the current install as I am learning more and more regarding Linux systems as long as I am debugging that issue. Now I am trying Firefox from snap to identify if the issue is the firefox build or not

My reply was aggressive because I'm not a very nice person, it's probably best not to take it personally.

Do it yourself if you're in such a hurry:

https://wiki.debian.org/SimpleBackportCreation

The developers' attentions are focused on the stable release, backports are provided as a convenience only.

You hope

Anyway, if gsmartcontrol shows no errors then perhaps check the cable & connectors.

Does the systemd journal hold any clues?

It is non-persistent by default, read `man journald.conf` to find out how to change that.

It seems that my computer is effected by the intel's c-state bug in the recent linux Kernel. Since I appended "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" in grub default options and after 7 days of continues usage of that computer I had no Kernel freezes or other issues.

Instructions:
open the default grub options:

Code: Select all

vim /etc/default/grub
and append

Code: Select all

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
My configuration:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet intel_idle.max_cstate=1"
