Greetings!

What is the explanation for using /var/www as the webdirectory instead of the /srv directory?
Should'nt the /var directory being used for variable data and the /srv directory vor service data?

I am new to debian-9 and being just curious

That's a historical decision. You could argue that the contents of a website are variable data. The /srv directory was intended for network shares, but those are nowadays mostly under /mnt of /media.
