RESOLVED Nautilus timeout, PC slow, permisions denied

#1 Post by John99 »

Further update.
Issue but have workaround.
Have been having issues again with nautilus timing out and not registering or not responding once open.
Have switched to using the Nemo file manager, which is I understand a fork of Nautilus/Gnome Files and that is operating trouble free.
I can even have them both open at the same time with Nautilus not responding but Nemo working normally.
Thought I would add the info as it may help others in a similar situation.

I have no idea what the cause of the problem is & could not see recent bugs or reports of problems with Nautilus but I do have a workaround.

2nd Update RESOLVED :D

Title was "Nautilus file manager timeout, PC slow, permisions (sic) denied"

This is currently not reproducible.
I am not getting the permissions denied. Nautilus is starting up ok
It may still be slow but it is a low powered machine with little memory and tends to swap.

Hi and thanks in advance to anyone reading this and attempting to help. I am not a complete beginner but am rather lost as soon as it gets at all technical.
This is a second user account as the first also had problems & I thought a new account may solve the issue but obviously it did not.
I could try always using an admin account but I suspect that is not the best way forward.

The primary problem is that the file manager Nautilus will not start.
If I try by clicking the icon I get a throbber or whatever it is called showing activity is starting but nothing starts up.
Most/all other GUI programs start ok, and I am posting this from the problem machine and account.
If I attempt to start from a terminal I get a specific message:

Code: Select all

name:~$ nautilus
Failed to register: Timeout was reached
I can start by using su that gives various warnings but I think that may be expected as I see similar on other accounts or machines that do not have issues

Code: Select all

name:~$ su -- root
Password:
name# nautilus

(nautilus:6309): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_proxy_new_sync: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_CONNECTION (connection)' failed .... *
The machine is generally very slow and I note if I use 'top' that the (wait} 'wa' value is in double figures i.e. 44.6 in this instance, {even though the idle value is also high at present)

Code: Select all

Looking at the syslog using a handy gui app I note it is full of "Permission denied" entries. Sometimes more than 10 per second. The browser connection reset when I tried attaching the file I will try to attach the file or a portion of it to a follow on post in a few minutes. That way I do not risk losing the info I have typed.

I am using:
Debian Stretch 9 Gnome on a 64bit AMD laptop.
I could attach a full listing of hardware and software but I do not wish to clutter your forum with unnecessary information, but please advise if you think any further info would help. Thanks

Update
Part of the syslog now attached. I guess the full file is too large for the forum. I think I have other permission denied entries besides Nautilus & Tracker.
I will clear the current syslog and should have something of a more useful size. I note it does not allow dot.txt lets try as an .odt. no
OK will paste a few lines in here;
