3) hplip purged and reinstalled. It checked with hp-doctor, hp-test... I also try to install the printer with hp-setup.

What does the
Cups Admin -> Add Printer
show

I've been printing to officejet for years using cups
without HPLIP

I do have printer-driver-hpcups cups-ppdc and for a laserjet
I'd also install printer-driver-hpijs hpijs-ppds hplip-ppds

Than open Cups Admin and click Add Printer

Lastly - if you need all the printer magic
install system-config-printer
That give you everything there is, for Every printer Known to GNU

The HP-LaserJet-Professional-P1102 uses the ZjStream protocol.

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/

The protocol is the filter you are missing or perhaps not implementing. The filter is available in either the foo2zjs package or the hplip package.
Although both packages are dated in Debian 9, the P1102 is a circa 2012 printer that should be supported by the Debian 9 version of hplip and foo2zjs

Two paths to a working printer.

Path 1 - install hplip. cups is a dependency.
Bloated, python click to configure interface. Should find the 1102 as an hplip driver

Path 2 - less bloated
Install foo2zjs with cups and reconfigure the printer - 1102 foo2zjs should be a driver option.

Edit
There are also a number of no authentication warnings. Are you printing via USB or Wireless. If wireless, HP typically provides both Infrastructure (print job goes computer -> router -> printer) and Ad-hoc (computer ->printer) wireless networking This is why you sometimes see the same printer discovered 3 different ways (infrastructure+ad-hoc+usb). If you're using wireless, you will need the wpa key entered in the printer for the protocol used (ad-hoc vs infrastructure).

The other quirk is that these printers need firmware uploaded each time they are powered up. Theoretically, the firmware can be loaded over wireless but to trouble shoot, it would also to establish the drivers are correct on usb first.

Another quirk may be the wireless port. The web page I linked above recommend the HP JetDirect port (9100) on Ubuntu. Not sure why Debian would be any different. This would be easiest to implement if you have assigned a static IP (example 192.168.1.3) to the printer (socket://192.168.1.3:9100)

Yes, foo2zjs was missing. But I 'lost' it when I tried to repair the printing. Reinstalling that driver did not do the trick.

Finally, I recovered my system from a Clonezilla backup (1/nov). And the printer works again!!!

But, when I updated the system, the printer s*-cks again :-(

I believe is the libgs9-common package that is updated in november to libgs9-common (9.26~dfsg-0+deb9u1). https://www.linuxcompatible.org/news/story/ghostscript_security_update_for_debian_9.html

I tried to force to the package to the previous version (9.20) thru Synaptic manager but with no result. It' is marked as security package for debian https://packages.debian.org/stretch/libgs9-common. If I attempt to remove has a lot of dependency warnings.

Now I want to download and downgrade to a 9.20-9.25 version and force to update but that not affecting another package. How it would be the command?

dkpk -install --force ????

Possible workaround?: https://askubuntu.com/questions/924915/broken-ghostscript-configuration it does not works for me (/usr/share/ghostscript/9.26/iccprofiles are linked to /usr/share/color/icc/ghostscript) but I want to investigate this way a bit futhermore, because the debug of the printer (when I use hplip only) in /var/log/cups tells something related to 'Color Manager: No profiles found". I think here is the problem.

it might not work on Stretch that way

also from the libgs9-common package page.
GPL Ghostscript is used for PostScript/PDF preview and printing. Usually as a back-end to a program such as ghostview, it can display PostScript and PDF documents in an X11 environment.

This package provides common architecture-independent files needed by the GPL Ghostscript library.

By default, GPL Ghostscript uses a font from the fonts-droid package to approximate glyphs in PDFs for which the requested CJK TrueType font is missing. If the fonts-droid package is not installed, these glyphs will be rendered as bullets.

if there are unconfigured packages half installed on the machine
as user
Code: Select all
aptitude search '~c'

as root or sudo
Code: Select all
aptitude purge '~c'

Those packages now purged can be installed again if desired.

Those packages (if any result from the search) are stuck in the unconfigured state until they are purged.
They will not upgrade, reinstall or remove.
they need to be purged first,
than reinstall if packages are wanted again.

good for you
that you found and fixed the bug.

If you want to file a report on libgs9-common or libgs9
the maintainer may ask you to help triage the regression and/or breakage to hplip or foo2zjs or ....

something like
libgs9[version] breaks printing to HP Lazerjet Printer[model]

downgraded libgs9-common and libgs9 [versions] to libgs9-common and libgs9 [versions] and printer works again.

I sent a bug request to Ghostscript.

PD: I have to downgrade complete Ghostscript to solve it to :

ghostscript_9.20~dfsg-3.2+deb9u5_amd64

libgs9_9.20~dfsg-3.2+deb9u5_amd64
libgs9-common_9.20~dfsg-3.2+deb9u5_all

great work
thanks very much
:) :P

ps:
while looking up spelling of foo2zjs I see there is also
printer-driver-foo2zjs and printer-driver-foo2zjs-common.
if those two are installed as well as foo2zjs cups and open-ddp hpijs-ppd libppd0
HPLIP may not be necessary
and printing with the Lazerjet may work using only Cups, PPDs packages and a few printer-driver-* packages.

Ghostscript is a build dependency for foo2zjs and hplip Both may need to be rebuilt. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions on the foo2zjs website to build the latest version.
The complexity of these printers can be seen in the Arch linux foo2zjs-nightly build

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/foo2zjs-nightly/.

For those who bother to do pre-purchase research, Samsung/Brother Printers that use PCL5/PCL6 can be had for the same cost as HP's ZjStream printers and are much easier to deal with in Linux/BSD.

The Ghostscript team reply that could be a problem with the Freetype version I use.

I use a hacked (no official and outdated) Freetype (freetype-infinality).

I know that I have to change it, but still not. With Infinality I get cool and crisp fonts. Well, when I change to Debian 10, I will have any choice.

if you have an empty partition you can run Debian 10 in a dual boot with stable
and get a head start on howto use your custom fonts with it.
remember installing less packages makes it easier to figure out how to do more with less
as opposed to installing more packages and doing less with more.
