Also, ask yourself if you should be running Sid if you have to ask these sort of questions. Especially when you don't let others know you're running Sid in the first place, right off.

Use Arch Linux instead, it is *much* easier to manage than sid and is designed to work as a rolling release, unlike sid (which is designed to break randomly at any given time).

You really have a poor excuse for running Sid with its attendant problems.

Yes, I do believe people can learn, some persistence is needed. Building from source is not rocket science, our OP managed to install Debian after all. There is a plethora of tutorials on the internet about compiling. A little time, a pot of coffee maybe and the results will come.

voidlinux is rolling release too and also pretty easy to use.
otoh i can't say to me using Sid was unusual troublesome, i used it for more than 5 years. In that time i had to restore from backup once.
mixed testing/unstable version is a little bit more of work, but people said it would be slightly more stable than sid itself.

debian stable with backports, perhaps do a simple-sid-backport now and then, perhaps add the solutions by stevepusser, sounds like a very good solution to me.
Also to get the head a bit deeper into the way debians-package-management works, without running into serious problems now and then.


anyway: make sure
- you have a good backup-solution and
- install apt-listbugs, and
- upgrade regularly, say once a day, and
- if there is a problem, wait a day and try again
- join #debian-testing IRC channel and
- be prepared to get told to not use it, aka "getting flamed",
in case you refuse to give up on Sid (or testing, or mixed testing/unstable).

If OP is gonna build from source, he should start with much easier applications than VLC. It is too complex and too time-consuming even for me. And why would he do it, all three branches of Debian have fairly recent version of VLC.

OP, start with something like a new kernel or a game. 0 A.D. is fun to build from source.
