I have had problems recently after the latest SID updates logging in as superuser, with plasmashell overamping at 100% cpu and hanging while loading a widget.
I temporarily disabled plasmashell.rc and rebooted.
After that no plasmashell related DE will let me log in, regardless of account. The actual password file seems unaffected as I can boot up fine in Cinnamon.
I put the original plasmashell.rc file back - no help.
The greeter will not take any plasma related login attempts.
Any suggestions?
(TIA!!)

HELP! Plasmashell prevents login
Re: HELP! Plasmashell prevents login
Reinstalled Plasma.
No joy.
Now it tries to prevent logins on ANY DM.
Disabled plasmashell, still prevents logins from user accounts, but at least lets me in on LXQT as root.

That might be the problem.
Yanked out lightdm, rerouted to sddm - VT login.
Fine try startx sddm - endless boot cycle.
Kill it, and just startx: Brings me to MATE!
I can live with mate, but hoping the updates fix things.
User account still cannot login after reinstall old ETC and even POLKIT . Even after passwd 'useraccount'
If that is what SID is these days, its more than I bargained for - but WTF - this is a *development* system. As Long as I have a root login and my terminals I can pretty much do what I want. Or so I think for now.
I just dont understand what happened to KDE while i was away from linux. Mate seems to have full kde app access, which if fine by me.
Still havent figgered out how to get desktop icons working though. Some options from google simply are not here.
