I cannot hear some MP3 using Firefox browser

#1 Post by rayos »

Hi. I'm using Firefox browser ESR 60.4.0esr (32-bit) provided by default in Debian Buster repository because the recent version does not work on my old PC.

In some places the only thing I can hear is two clicks, one at the beginning of the supposed hearing and another at the end, but in other sites it works fine.

For example, on this page I can hear them:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/en/dic ... lo?q=Hello

But on this one it does not work:

http://www.wordreference.com/es/transla ... word=Hello

In order to get an idea of what may be happening I download the audio files into the hard drive. It sounds good with Audacious player, but with Firefox browser I can only listen the Cambridge ones, but never those of the WordReference.

I searched into the source code of the pages and downloaded the files:

This one sounds good:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/en/med ... /hello.mp3 (with sound)

This one can not be heard:

http://www.wordreference.com/audio/en/u ... 042667.mp3 (without sound)

I consulted with "file" command and this is what I got:

$ file Cambridge.mp3

Cambridge.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.4.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 56 kbps, 44.1 kHz, Monaural

$ file WordReference.mp3

WordReference.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 2.4.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v2, 56 kbps, 22.05 kHz, Stereo

The only thing I notice is that those who can be heard are "Monaural" and those who can not be heard are "Stereo".

Thanks and best regards.

That plays fine on my Debian buster system.

Code: Select all

empty@shinken:~ $ apt policy firefox-esr
firefox-esr:
  Installed: 60.4.0esr-1
  Candidate: 60.4.0esr-1
  Version table:
 *** 60.4.0esr-1 500
        500 https://cdn-aws.deb.debian.org/debian buster/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
empty@shinken:~ $
Are you using PulseAudio?

Code: Select all

pgrep -a pulse
I don't actually need PA in my dwm desktop but I can't think of anything else to check :?
