Wicd and FireFox with PSD cca every 30s write to disk. Why?

Postby ruwolf » 2019-02-11 20:40

Hello, dear supporters. :)

I use SSD as only storage, so I want to reduce writing to this disk to minimum.

I use standard settings like noatime,commit=1800 in /etc/fstab, scheduler do deadline, swapping to 0, hibernation and sleeping turned off, SyncIntervalSec=1800s in /etc/systemd/journald.conf etc.

It seems to me, that something has started to write to disk quite often.

In iotop I can see, that cca. every 30 seconds wicd writes to disk by command:
python -O /usr/share/wicd/daemon/wicd-daemon.py --no-daemon --keep-connection

I have installed and started by systemctl --user Profile-sync-daemon, but also PureBrowser (= FireFox in PureOS, which is based on Debian testing) writes in similar intervals to disk with these messages from iotop:
purebrowser [mozStorage #3]
purebrowser [localStorage DB]
purebrowser [DOM Worker]

Please, is it normal behaviour?
Why Wicd is writing to disk 2 times per minute?
Should PureBrowser(FireFox) not be limited by PSD in writing to disk?

good catch about firefox, did some quick searches. check recovery.js and browser.sessionstore.interval and others

not sure about wicd, but look in the .py and see what it is doing?

...Please, is it normal behaviour?...

No, unless you use windows software on linux which we are all now doing. It's abusive, and we try and keep them from killing our hardware by sharing information like this.

Thank You.

p.s. iotop -a is what you are using to fgure this out?

Thank you for your answer and trying to help.

No, I have neglected this great option -a or --accumulated in iotop. Thank you.

I have not run any Microsoft Windows applications, I have not Wine installed.

Setting browser.sessionstore.interval to 30 minutes does not seem to help.

I have found another suspicious writer with your help (iotop -a):
Xorg :0 -seat seat0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt12 -novtswitch

Does it mean, that somebody is connected to my machine remotely?

In journalctl I can see huge amount of these lines:
feb 12 13:24:33 X200-Pure profile-sync-daemon[7879]: filename overflows max-path len by 5: -backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/-backup/
(it continues out of width of screen)

May be it is source of FireFox writing?

WTF? drop that browser and whatever it's doing to sync profiles. If it's based on firefox, then install firefox.

WICD is a hacky scripty mess. I can't even imagine why anyone would need that.
If you only need Ethernet, then use systemd-networkd or ifupdown.
If you need Wireless and the computer is more or less static, you can combine networkd and wpa_supplicant.
If you move around and/or need a GUI, use network manager.
But really, nobody needs WICD.

Don't use LightDM, it runs X as root.

Try GDM or a console login instead.

I use this snippet at the end of ~/.profile to start the desktop automatically after a console login at TTY1:
Code: Select all
[ "$(tty)" = "/dev/tty1" ] && exec startx
