D-10 (Buster) concerns

Postby mike acker » 2019-07-26 12:29

1 twice now I've had the mouse suddenly become un-responsive on a Firefox document. I had to hit the MoBo RESET switch and reboot.

2 VLC Media player: sound garbled on certain media -- (rendered with OpenShot) -- once closed: will not re-open.

These are just "things I've noticed" -- since my switch to D-10.

If this page is full of scripts and you don't block them at all, it can happen that the CPU is overloaded.
If you find a page which is not "confidential", just share it for test.

thanks. I'm running a Rizen5/2600: it ain't likely they can busy that thing out. Even rendering video only gets about 40% utilization. But: I'll keep an eye on it; maybe I can ID a bad page. Browser is Firefox_ESR.

You have installed the CPU microcode, right?

I'm running buster on a Ryzen 5 2500u with the µcode installed and it's solid as a rock.

In Firefox, can you type about:config in the url bar, and check for these values.
Start typing layers.acceleration in the search bar.
layers.acceleration.disabled
layers.acceleration.draw-fps
layers.acceleration.force-enabled

By inverting (false/true/) one by one for test, any change on the page you visit ?

thanks; i'll check this.

there should be some kind of hot-key that would get the attention of the kernel so that a task that is hanged in a loop or in a wait-state -- can be cancelled

=> this issue only occurs once in a while so it may be a bit hard to track down.

Re: D-10 (Buster) concerns

Postby JordanL » 2019-07-30 22:16

Hello,
VERY NEW TO Linux,
I have installed Debian 10 and there are a couple of main issues I am having.
1. My internet is connected and I may get a few seconds and sometimes minutes of surfing or installing update/packages then though it says that Wifi is connected, I am no longer able to perform the previously mentioned functions- browsing the internet or download updates.
Also, I have just noticed that when I do a reboot I see A LOT of failed messages regarding iwlwifi.

2. Going into the menu and selecting Reboot, the machine doesn't reboot just shuts down.

Neither of this issues exited with Windows 10 Home installed.
Again I am very new to linux and was wondering if anyone has experience this before? What was/is the resolve?

Kind regards,

Jordan

here is a link to a page that seemed to cause a Firefox hang:

https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2019/08/01/hoarder-disorder-house-detroit/1884771001/

the problem was not reproduceable: when I returned to that page it loaded OK -- although -- it is a nasty busy page

I notice Alt-Q will terminate Firefox; next time I'll try that. we should have a hot-key that will let us break out of such hangs
