Low disk space on /var warning

Postby Morales1235 » 2019-07-31 03:50

Hello,
I get warning about space on /var. "Low disk space on /var (400 MB)" on computer startup. It now ~350 MB. How can I know why I am running out of space? Should I extend partition or delete some files?
It seems that biggest directory there is /var/cache/apt/archives.
Code: Select all
sudo du -hs /var/*
7.6M   /var/backups
4.7G   /var/cache
3.6G   /var/lib
4.0K   /var/local
0   /var/lock
36M   /var/log
16K   /var/lost+found
4.0K   /var/mail
4.0K   /var/opt
0   /var/run
68K   /var/snap
3.7M   /var/spool
76K   /var/tmp

The other dirs are not too big (/snap)?
Code: Select all
sudo du -hs /*
12M   /bin
100M   /boot
0   /dev
11M   /etc
77G   /home
0   /initrd.img
0   /initrd.img.old

4.0K   /lib64
16K   /lost+found
12K   /media
4.0K   /mnt
1.1G   /opt

You are running out of space, because you use a lot of space, there. ;)
You can remove apt cache archives (downloaded packages .deb) by command
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get clean
