If none of the more specific forums is the right place to ask

how many packages are available?

Postby Rich_Morin » 2019-10-09 03:47

There are various ways to get an idea of how many packages are available for a Debian system. For example, I can go to https://popcon.debian.org and download the by_inst.gz file. Unpacking this gives me a list of 171500 packages. Alternatively, I can run a command such as:

Code: Select all
$ apt-cache pkgnames | wc -l
64271

Because the first answer is almost three times the size of the second, I have to ask how to account for the difference. Did 2/3 of the packages disappear or what? Inquiring gnomes need to mine...

Currently, there are 60425 packages available for the amd64 architecture.

according to https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debi ... 02.en.html
It may not be absolutely up-to-date but certainly would be in the ball park.

Your number derived from popcon most likely derives from all architectures, not just amd64.
