Kdesu is missing in SID?

Kdesu is missing in SID?

Postby zoli62 » 2019-11-09 04:25

I noticed that the kdesu package was missing from the unstable branch. I searched in the Synaptic package installer but couldn't find it. Am I correct?

Source appears to be in testing and unstable but not binaries - https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/kdesu
I believe it's functionality is being replaced by pkexec. Only some applications have PolicyKit rules though.

You can use a workaround - https://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/ ... root-user/

Or you can install stevepusser's kde rootactions service menu from MX repo. Works for me in Sid. - http://mxrepo.com/MX19packages.html

This, which is:
Code: Select all
pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY KDE_SESSION_VERSION=5 KDE_FULL_SESSION=true dolphin

works!

So, now I can open Dolphin as root from the panel or use the rootactions from MX.

Happy. :D

Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
I occasionally use root actions from Dolphin to edit a system file. But mostly I use nano in a console pretending to be a geek. But not an ubergeek, they use vim or emacs.

Thank you for your valuable answers. I know these workarounds. Using pkexec is a bit more uncomfortable than kdesu, because it requires preconfiguration. Regardless, I don't think pkexec can completely replace kdesu, but I don't want to start a war of opinion.
