How to install Etcher usb burner

Postby vinoman » 2020-01-19 22:21

I used to have Etcher installed on this Debian 10 Gnome and for some strange reason it has disappeared! It's the best usb burner I've used and I would like to install it again. I downloaded the file again but it does not open.

You probably know but just in case, it is now known as Balena Etcher and has to be started as such.

There's no need to install it. Download the zip file and run it as an app image. In my menu I run it with
Code: Select all
 ~/Downloads/./balenaEtcher-1.5.52-x64.AppImage

That's what I've done before but when clicking on the appimage Etcher doesn't open and it's checked to execute as a prgram. How do I get it do open?

Try running it from the terminal to see what errors show up.

I believe that recent Electron apps like that, which use a built-in Chromium, now require a kernel that supports sandboxing, and the Debian kernel does not---though Liquorix kernels do. Adding the "--no-sandbox" argument to its startup command may get it working.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Kodi 18.5, Blender 2.8.2, 5.5 kernels, Openshot 2.5.0, Telegram-desktop 1.9.14, LibreOffice 6.4.1~rc1

I run it as an AppImage and have that in /opt in a fairly bland Buster installation with Plasma desktop. Also have on other machines with MATE.

Starts with command:
Code: Select all
"/opt/balenaEtcher-1.5.56-x64.AppImage" %U

A touch slow to start, but works flawlessly, more reliable for USBs than "cp' or 'dd'.

I have balena-etcher-appimage (1.5.71) installed and it works without any problems on kde testing.
But I hardly use is because dd also works allways flawlessly!!!

Agree, 'dd' should work perfectly but I was having hit or miss results with USBs. More misses than hits. balenaEtcher solved that for me.

I now remember running and adding no sandbox to a file and it got Etcher working. where is that file to adjust?

I've run Etcher on many distros with no trouble. Is the reason because Debian is a server OS and is more concerned with security than most other distros?

...anyway I did have it working and would like to use it again.
