[solved]Is there any newer Conky-Manager for Debian Buster?

If none of the more specific forums is the right place to ask

[solved]Is there any newer Conky-Manager for Debian Buster?

Postby Heliosstyx » 2020-03-03 12:15

I searched this forum for postings referring to Conky-Manager, but here are only older postings. Is there a newer version for Conky-Manager running under Debian Buster? What are alternative System-Monitors for Plasma 5? Thank you very much.

I have used the Simple System Monitor plasmoid in the past.
Lenovo ThinkPad T440S, Intel Core i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Debian Buster (KDE)

You can follow https://wiki.debian.org/CreatePackageFromPPA to make a working Debian package from the conky-manager PPA. Don't know if that would work though.

But is it really so hard to configure conky manually? Try it, you might even enjoy the experience.

Here is the link for conky manager latest.

https://github.com/teejee2008/conky-manager/releases

Use the run version x86 or x64 from terminal run these commands

sudo chmod +x conky-manager-v2.4-amd64.run
./conky-manager-v2.4-amd64.run

and it will install and works well on Debian as I use it myself. :D :D :D

I don't think that will work for Debian buster.

I've just built and installed a working .deb in my buster system by using
Code: Select all
# apt install devscripts git
git clone https://github.com/teejee2008/conky-manager && cd conky-manager
sed -i -e 's/realpath/coreutils/' -e 's/valac-0.26/valac/' debian/control
# mk-build-deps --install --remove
debuild -us -uc
# apt install ../conky-manager_2.4_amd64.deb
# aptitude purge conky-manager-build-deps devscripts git # don't remove git unless you don't want it

@Head_on_a_stick: the above mentioned mk.…. command should be done with 'sudo' otherwise it fails. I gave up KDE, because it's buggy and slow on my machine. It's a Desktop from the late nineties: nothing for me. I stay at GNOME.

Conky-Manager is a fine tool, if you are knowing what you are doing, but much of the downloadable themes are very inconsistent and so it causes a lot of work to finetune it.

Conky itself is not very hard to configure if someone understand the pattern behind the conky config-files.

All the lines prepended with a # symbol should be run as root.

It's no longer developed, but we have had it in the MX repos, built for the various Debian releases, for quite some time. It was never packaged for Debian itself: http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/c/conky-manager/

Note that the sample conkies in the themepack in the original source include fonts that are proprietary and not approved for redistribution https://github.com/teejee2008/conky-man ... themepacks such as GE Inspira, so I stripped those out of the MX version. Instead, we ship DFSG-safe themes in a separate mx-conky package. http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/m/mx-conky/ that works with conky-manager.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Kodi 18.6, Strawberry 0.6.11, Muse 3.1.0, Chromium with va-api, Audacity 2.4.1, Kdenlive 20.04

Thank you Steve: For me it's not clear which packages form MX-Linux can be used by a "Pure Debian" User and which not? Is your tip for Conky directly usable for me under Debian and how I have to do it? Thanks guys.
