[SOLVED] GIMP doesn't start

Postby capcla » 2020-03-06 20:23

Hi,
for some time, gimp doesn't start.
If I try to start it by terminal, the system return me this error
Code: Select all
$ gimp
gimp: /usr/local/lib/libbabl-0.1.so.0: no version information available (required by gimp)
gimp: /usr/local/lib/libbabl-0.1.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libgimpwidgets-2.0.so.0)
gimp: /usr/local/lib/libbabl-0.1.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libgimpcolor-2.0.so.0)
gimp: /usr/local/lib/libbabl-0.1.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgegl-0.4.so.0)
gimp: /usr/local/lib/libbabl-0.1.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgegl-npd-0.4.so)
gimp: relocation error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgegl-0.4.so.0: symbol babl_get_model_flags version V0_1_0 not defined in file libbabl-0.1.so.0 with link time reference

How can I fix the problem?
Thanks

EDIT
Could it be a deb-multimedia package?
Now deb-multimedia's repo is not active, but it was active in the past

Yes.

Restore your system from the backup you made before wrecking it with deb-multimedia.

Is too late for backup. At this point, I believe more easy find the the bad package(s), if there's a way
Do you know a way?

Code: Select all
aptitude search '?narrow(?installed, !?origin(debian))'

^ That should show any packages not installed from the Debian repositories. Good luck removing them though...

As far as I know, DMO's fake higher version of libbabl didn't put anything in /usr/local/lib, but instead stuck to Debian policy. Plus the errors are different, based on the MX users that broke gimp with dmo's libbabl, and are easily seen as dmo's fault. Anyway:

Code: Select all
apt policy libbabl-0.1-0

will help clear things up, but you still have some splaining to do about /usr/local. Did you try a manual build and install of babl?

BTW, you can also install the latest GIMP 2.10.18 from one of my OBS repositories--the multimedia one--and it won't poison your system like DMO might: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... ssert/gimp

Well if you're running testing then the /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgegl-0.4.so.0 error could be due to a soname bump, which is one of the joys of the development branches. It might get fixed if you wait a bit and update again.

But that doesn't tell us from where the /usr/local/lib stuff originated. No Debian packages would put libraries there, that's for sure.

The newer GIMP also runs fine with 0.1.74 backported to Buster in the MX 19 test repo:

Code: Select all
$ apt policy libbabl-0.1-0
libbabl-0.1-0:
  Installed: 0.1.74-1~mx19+1
  Candidate: 0.1.74-1~mx19+1
  Version table:
 *** 0.1.74-1~mx19+1 100
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.1.66-0.1~mx19+1 500
        500 http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/repo buster/main amd64 Packages
     0.1.62-1 500
        500 http://deb.debian.org/debian buster/main amd64 Packages

and nothing babl related is in /usr/local/lib at all.

Yes, a copy on libbabl is in my /usr/local/lib
Code: Select all
/usr/local/lib# ls
babl-0.1   libbabl-0.1.so     libbabl-0.1.so.0.155.1  python2.7
libbabl-0.1.la   libbabl-0.1.so.0  pkgconfig        python3.7

But, where do you understand that my libbabl is in /usr/local/lib?

Ok, this is a very stupid question...

But with these suggestions
Head_on_a_Stick wrote:No Debian packages would put libraries there, that's for sure.

stevepusser wrote:and nothing babl related is in /usr/local/lib at all.

I've solved the problem.

I deleted libbabl-0.1*
Code: Select all
/usr/local/lib# rm libbabl-0.1*

then, I've reinstalled gimp and xsane and then gimp and xsane are stared!

Thanks a lot!

EDIT
Now this is the contents' /usr/local/lib folderd
Code: Select all
/usr/local/lib# ls
babl-0.1  pkgconfig  python2.7   python3.7

Must I delete babl-0.1 folder too?

You shouldn't have anything in /usr/local/lib, do the files belong to any packages?
Code: Select all
for file in $(find /usr/local/lib); do dpkg -S "$file"; done

The only way for those babl files to be in /usr/local/lib is for someone to have manually compiled and install a version of babl around its 0.1.55 release. If you didn't do it, your system is compromised and can't be trusted, but it's more likely that you did it, and just don't recall it.
