WebChat

#1 Post by geoffkaniuk »

I would like to ask a question in the #debian channel in OFTC https://webchat.oftc.net/ I have registered my nickname. Once I connect, I see this message:

Code: Select all

[#debian]
Welcome to #debian! Please see /topic for current information
in the #debian window, embedded in lots of messages just saying who has quit and who has joined. At this point I am stuck - how do I go about asking my question (about popcon-largest unused).

So far just get error reponses. What am I missing?

I don't feel like registering there, just to see it,.. I guess you just type your question, and wait, if someone that is all ready joined sees it and can answer, they will,
So far just get error reponses.
What do the error responses say ? Usually they say what and why the error is, go figure.

Welcome to the joys of irc

Just type your question and hit return 8)

But I suggest you read up some of the guides below. irc can seem like another wold at first... it is! but damn it so cool

1. If you intend to chat from home get a client.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso ... at_clients

As a new irc user go with something nice n easy like
https://packages.debian.org/buster/hexchat
https://packages.debian.org/buster/pidgin

You can always use a webclient when not at home.

Once you've got a handle on it maybe weechar or irssi

https://packages.debian.org/buster/weechat-curses
https://packages.debian.org/buster/irssi

read up!

Yes, that is what I remembered from Xchat, but there were no actual messages. Anyway, I have now installed Hexchat and that has a good interface.

Thanks
Geoff

If you still have the error message in both the web interface and hexchat that seems like a configuration issue. If you start hexchat in a terminal it may give you some clue. Normally I'd say ask in #hexchat

I don't get errors now. I do have a nickserv password and nickname (BlueWhale) but it seems that I need to enter those every time I log on. Not sure if AutoJoin on #debian is the answer. Not much activity at the moment - evenings better?
