postfix domain vs FQDN

Postby qro » 2020-08-29 13:21

Hi

I want to setup a simple email server.
Just one domain, no email boxes, mailman and mail forwaring via aliases.

I started with:
https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/s ... ver-ubuntu

All DNS checks are OK

When sendig a email as test
echo "test email" | sendmail your-account@gmail.com
The sender is showed as root@domain.com

But when using the mail command to send out an email the sender is showed as root@mail.domain.com

What needs to ajust to show the domain name and not the FQDN when sending from the comandline?

Show some details, for example what does your
Code: Select all
/etc/postfix/main.cf
have in it ? What does your 'hostname' have ?
Your postfix configuration probably is bad. Some search foo:(key words)
Code: Select all
email the sender is showed as root@mail.domain.com
can get answer to this as well, it is a common problem , or read the documentation for Debian, EG: https://wiki.debian.org/Postfix

That tutorial looks like it is for ubuntu, and certain specific hosting site, I did not look at much, but you will be better off using documentation specific to Debian.

I'm curious - what email client are you using? For example, if using mutt, you may need to set you config file to reflect to proper domain.''

Example:

set from = 'you@yourdomain.com'
set envelope_from_address = 'you@yourdomain.com'
set use_envelope_from = yes
set hostname = 'syourdoamin.com'
Server: Debian 10, Workstation: Debian Sid (BSPWM)
Laptop: Debian Sid (BSPWM)
