(Solved) Live Stream Wallpaper?

Postby Castle_Age » 2020-09-14 16:09

Hey everyone! I recently had an idea that I wanted to try to figure out if I could use a live stream zoo as my wallpaper. I figured you could do this with VLC Player and then set the video as wallpaper. Didn't turn out the way I had expected obviously. Even whenever I tried adding a regular video as a wallpaper to test it, it wasn't exactly a wallpaper, more so a full screen. Does anyone know if this is possible? I just think this would be really cool to have on a family computer of a live steamed Zoo of penguins or a lion exhibit as the wallpaper.

Here is a website I was going to use to test this:
Lions: https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/lion-cam/#lioncam
Penguins: https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/penguin-cam/#penguincam

Although the quality isn't that great it's a start. Probably better ones out there.
I've tried attaching the url's to vlc by inspecting the element but with no luck.

---Searches bring up Windows programs that kinda do this, but not only are the programs kinda fishy looking they aren't live live. Another guy had an idea like this to and I'm not sure if he was able to figure it out either, didn't looked solved. He mentioned traffic cams which would be awesome as well. Just wanted to know if anyone has figured this out yet, that would be an awesome touch to Linux if you ask me.

Typically I'm a boring solid color desktop guy and hate cpu sucking screensavers, especially in the acceleration lacking linux world, but on occasion I get bored. Once I tried some wallpaper variation to show some system states, minor changes only I know, scripted and some triggered by cron. I have some time elapsed sequences to work with, that's neat, attempting a redshift like cycle....but then I get anxious with getting stuff done go back to solids...fun man suppressed. I have set up a mpv window as a desktop backing with a live tv stream since I listen better than I watch. That got annoying too.

This actually worked quite well. Thank you for this, worked with the streaming video right away by dragging and dropping the url link into the video player.
And yes I also agree with you about it getting annoying eventually. Thanks for the idea.

Instructions in case anyone else wants to know: Example:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install mpv

Open mpv player.

Go to website of webcam.

Right click, Inspect Element (firefox)
Find:
Code: Select all
<section class="webcam cam">
    <div class="inner">
        <figure class="cam">
            <iframe style="scrolling:no;" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen="" src="https://streaming4.camvista.com:5443/LiveApp/play.html?name=121249950539569009428767" frameborder="0"></iframe>
        </figure>

copy the https link into a notepad. (mousepad worked fine)
Code: Select all
https://streaming4.camvista.com:5443/LiveApp/play.html?name=121249950539569009428767

Highlight, then drag and drop link into mpv player window.

Maximize window.

Set as "Always Below Other Windows"
---------------------

I'm assuming other site's would work about the same as long as you can find the http link.

very good!
A long time ago I had the background live image from a b&w camera from an argus card as I remember. With a few led's, pointed towards blank sky I knew how hard it was snowing and how early I had to get up. The glow from the screen would wake me up.
