Up/Down volume buttons are also muting

#1 Post by andrewman67 »

Really sorry if this has come up before, but I'm having problems with searching the forums.

Suddenly, when I press the XF86AudioLowerVolume or the "raise" counterpart my audio also gets muted. It shows up that way in the panel notification as well, so I then have to press the unmute button to set it back. This is pretty annoying as anyone might imagine. Has anybody seen this before? Fixed it?

Using Debian 10 on a thinkpad (L412). This has actually been a problem as long as I can remember (I started using Linux on Debian 9 and it plagued me then), could never manage to solve it. I only got about two weeks of paradise after recently doing a new install.

Hope I haven't violated any board rules but oh well. Thank you to anyone who can help.

You forgot to tell us which desktop environment (or window manager) you're using.

If it worked originally then that suggests you have broken it. Can we see

Code: Select all

apt policy

Oh yeah, oops. I'm using LXQT.

here's the ouput of apt policy:

Package files:

release a=now
500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable/non-free amd64 Packages
release v=10.6,o=Debian,a=stable,n=buster,l=Debian,c=non-free,b=amd64
origin ftp.debian.org
500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable/contrib amd64 Packages
release v=10.6,o=Debian,a=stable,n=buster,l=Debian,c=contrib,b=amd64
origin ftp.debian.org
500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable/main amd64 Packages
release v=10.6,o=Debian,a=stable,n=buster,l=Debian,c=main,b=amd64
origin ftp.debian.org
500 http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates/main amd64 Packages
release v=10,o=Debian,a=stable,n=buster,l=Debian-Security,c=main,b=amd64

So your sources are fine but you should really use "buster" instead of "stable" to prevent an inadvertent upgrade to bullseye when that is released as Debian 11.

What did you do to your system in those two weeks after which it started misbehaving? Does a live ISO image handle the volume keys correctly?
