I can't resume a user session in Gnome

Postby GonzaloP » 2020-11-07 15:33

Hi,

I have been having this issue for over a year. When the system is inactive and blacks the screen, once I try to log in again the session is always lost, and all the software open is closed, as if I access a new session.
I was using the latest debian stable, I thought upgrading to testing would solve the problem, so I went from kernel 4.9 to 5.9 yet the problem remains.
I attach the dmesg dump here https://pastebin.com/7Q8KQL88. I am running:
5.9.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.9.1-1 (2020-10-17) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Keep in mind I had this issue in the stable version. I read that it could be chrome hardware acceleration I disabled that but the problem still remains.

I suspect that it could be the drivers of the graphic card:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP108M [GeForce MX150] (rev a1)

So, I install the drivers from the Nvidia page, but the problem remains.

Any suggestion?

Thank you very much!

Kernel 4.9 is from oldstable.

FWIW I do not experience the problem you describe in my Debian buster GNOME system.

I am aware it doesn't happen on every installation, but I have been dealing with this for more than a year, probably is something related a driver in my system.
But at this point, I don't even know where to start looking at.
Sometimes works just fine but 70% of the time I have to open a new user session.

Any suggestion?

Thanks

It appears your device may have Optimus dual graphics so I suggest you look into how to set that up correctly. I think just installing Nvidia drivers is not the way. Check the Debian wiki for Bumblebee which is one way to do it. Perhaps there are newer better ways too but I don't really keep up with developments with that as I don't have an Optimus laptop.
Also IIRC currently the 5.9 kernel is not supported by Nvidia driver in stable but should be ok with the driver now in backports. But again, installing that won't get your dual graphics working properly.
