Debian fonts

I have old Debian 9 (stretch) installed long time ago. After installation the default fonts didn't look very good on display of the box.
I tried some fixes, for example put custom fonts.conf file in /home/username/.config/fontconfig. Also I'e installed a few new fonts, include Ubuntu. Now it looks better. I don't remember what fonts was in default installation. Which fonts looks better on Debian 9 with Xfce DE? Maybe there are some fonts, that looks better than Ubuntu, Noto Sans or Droid Sans?

Have you read this? Noto Sans looks great on my computer.

I like Microsoft's fonts

FWIW I find that buster doesn't need a custom fonts.conf any more, fonts look great OOTB (IMO).

Microsoft fonts don't work well on linux. I have some of them installed, but all they look really poor, imho.
I have Noto fonts installed, via `sudo apt-get install fonts-noto`
But installer put also a vaste amount of unnecessary Noto versions, all these CJK, TC, JP, KR.
What command will install only default en versions of Noto font?

Did you rip them from a recent Windows 10 ISO image? Those newer versions are much better than the ones downloaded by the Debian package.

fonts-noto is a metapackage, see the dependencies for a list of the actual font packages and install what you want individually instead of the metapackage.
