Chrome and Chromium freezes after the latest update.

Chrome and Chromium freezes after the latest update.

Postby suman2021 » 2021-01-17 07:43

Hi, I have used both Chrome and Chromium quite a lot and both works just fine. However, after an update yesterday, I'm unable to work with them. They just freeze and even windows keys doesn't work, until I kill them from the panel
I'm using Debian 10 with Xfce on Acer Swift-3. Let me know if any other info helps.

Check ~/.xsession-errors or run chrom{e,ium} from a terminal to see any error messages.

There has been some talk about hardware acceleration for the GUI (not the va-api!) now being enabled by default for this new version, and disabling it in the settings fixing it. If you can't use the settings because of the freezing, start chromium in the terminal with

Code: Select all
chromium --disable-gpu

and then disable hardware acceleration in the settings.

Hi. Thanks. Disabling the hardware acceleration helped to solve the sandbox error. :)

I had the same problem and found that if I launch chromium from a terminal, as follows, chromium works fine
Code: Select all
chromium --gpu-sandbox-start-early

I then created a desktop launcher (Xfce) to make it a little easier. Besides I like GUI's.
