wget favored against curl

#1 Post by ychaouche »

Dear debian forums,

On a new install, wget is installed, but not curl, which seems to be more popular. Anyone knows if there's
a reason to include wget ?

wget is more popular. Inclusion in installation media is guided by results from popularity-contest. You can search for package names:
https://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=wget
https://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=curl

wget is ranked 111 and curl is ranked 587
curl seems to be more popular in scripts so I usually end up installing it at some stage. No problem, I'm sure it's on one of the 3 DVDs and is also merely a quick apt install curl away.

They're both useful for slightly different things, it's good to have both. If you don't install it odds are something will install it as a dependency. I'm more familiar with wget, I've used it for 20 years.
