No console login

#1 Post by sjoerd »

For some, to me unknown, reason I suddenly cannot switch to the console mode anymore. It used to be posible to switch using the Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 keystroke. A few days ago my screen stops receiving a signal when I hit that keystroke, and turns black. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7 again brings back my X-window system, but still no console login...
I also do not have any information on screen during the shut-down procedure. The text-mode stops working as soon as my windows-manager (kdm) is started. Switching to gdm had no effect, reinstalling x-windows and the console did no good either.
If you need any more information, please ask, I would really like to see this problem solved as I like the console mode for some operations.

Did you get to see the startup messages in console? What does dmesg tell you? Are you using the 2.6.13-1 debian kernel (apparently they forgot about vesafb).

#3 Post by Sjoerd »

I'm using the sarge distribution, so my kernel is the 2.6.8-16 kernel, compiled for the k7 processors. I see all the messages on screen during boot, until kde (my xwindow manager) is started. As soon as the x-window system is running, I cannot access the console anymore. I also do not have multiple x-window screens hitting Ctrl-Alt-F8, so that's also a problem. As soon as I try to go to other screens my monitor doesn't receive any signal anymore. The dmesg output I post below, I see that my AGP-card runs on 1x, that also needs a fix...
Thanks for the help so far, I hope the information I provided is sufficient.
