cups server config denied to root

cups server config denied to root

Postby beexo » 2005-12-20 22:11

I have been triyng to configure CUPS for a few days now, but without success.

I do not know what I did, but now even with root user, I cannot gain access to the cups server configuration. I get the message:
Unable to configure print server. Error message received from manager:
Unable to retrieve configuration file from the CUPS server. You probably don't have the access permissions to perform this operation.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I don't know exactly what are the files needed but they're maybe missing. If so, try dpkg-reconfigre cups.

If files exist and root cannot access it's because root doesn't own the file (type 'chown root:root CONFIG_FILE' where CONFIG_FILE refer to the file that cannot be accessed) or because it doesn't have access on it (type 'chmod u+rw CONFIG_FILE'). Either way this will grant root access on that files again.

Remember root user can do EVERYTHING on the system

Thankyou for your reply.

Although your sugestion did't resolve the problem, it could have under other circumstances. But I have fixed it.

What I did was remove (complete with config files) CUPSYS and KDEPRINT. Then I re-installed tthem again. This generated new config files and installed any missing ones.
