Does your computer fully boot or stop because of that error?

If it fully boots, run command 'dmesg' and paste its output here so we can worl from there.

Since you have this:
(...)
Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling.
Found and enabled local APIC
(...)

You should boot with this kernel parameter:
acpi=off

Let me talk about things separately...

No need to edit the grub configure file as of now. Try the parameter first to see if that works.

You can do this: as soon as you see the boot options, hit the 'e' key and add that paramenter at the end. Then you hit 'b' to boot.

Check if you still have that message.

About dual boot, may I suggest you to invert the order, install windows 1st and then Linux. Linux will take control over the boot. Two reasons for this: 1- it's the more practical way to achieve what you want, i.e., to have grub in control of dual boot, and 2nd - you minimize or eliminate the risk of your whole system to render unusable in case windows has one of its problems... with windows in control of the boot process, it'll be extremely difficult to access Linux.

Cheers,

Domecq

Okey ill do the first thing.

About dual boot: I realy can format again. I have alot of data on this box...and i cant format. I will be happy if tomorow ill cant do grub-install in rescue mode in ubuntu, or debian woody. We'll see. TNX for your answers.

I append acpi=off and etc. @ kernel but error is still there.

And what about this?: And i dont have close, maximize, minimize buttons in konqueror, or anywhere alse! Just in xmms! WTF? > Iam using KDE.

Try to boot with this other option: "noapic".

Check the dmesg output you pasted here and verify what devices are related to the IRQs interrupted.

As for the lack of buttons in konqueror, see how konqueror is presented from Gnome.

> What this error means? ACIP error on CPUO: 40 (40) I realy dont know.

I found this at Wikipedia: The Intel APIC Architecture is a system of Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers (APICs) designed by Intel for use in Symmetric Multi-Processor (SMP) computer systems. It was originally implemented by the Intel 82093AA and 82489DX, and is found in most x86 SMP motherboards. It is one of several attempts to solve interrupt routing efficiency issues in multiprocessor computer systems. Is your computer a multiprocessor system? If so, you need to be using an SMP kernel, which, from the first line of your dmesg dump, I suspect that you are not doing.

Google is your friend! Go to Google advanced search and do a search on the exact phrase "apic error on cpu0".

Consider the following line from your dmesg dump.: Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling. Have you purposely disabled APIC in your BIOS?

Ill take a look into BIOS tomorow. I think that might be a problem ... And no this box dont have several procesors..

hello Horald;

Since were on this subject, what exactly is ACPI?

I was looking at my dmesg and right at the top I get this.

ACPI disabled because your bios is from 99 and too old
You can enable it with acpi=force
Kernel command line: root=/dev/hda6 hdc=ide-scsi ro
No local APIC present or hardware disabled
The reason I was asking, is some Distros will shut my box all the way down to power off click. Others just shut down to the power off command on screen. Thank God Debian 3.1 with this kernel will shut down completely.

I do see some errors fly by on screen when I boot but dmesg doesn't seem to contain them.

Wikipedia is your other friend (in addition to Google ). Go to Wikipedia and do a search on ACPI. Personally, I would not try the acpi-force command. If you can identify the motherboard (and you have a DOS boot floppy), you might be able to download and install a newer BIOS from the manufacturer's website.

I have an upgrade CD that came with the mother board, I just never did use it because I never had any problems, even now I don't see any problem running without acpi, unless someone can explain to me what I'm missing be not having it.
