Sarge- all hell broke loose after a sudden reboot - done :(

Postby gabriel » 2006-02-20 00:34

Hello, my computer rebooted for no reaseon, and when I logged back... my desktop is a disaster, it can't load any icons, graphics. There are task bars and a whole lot of X signs on my desktop now :( There's trouble even with GDM, I can't log out to change and try if KDE is fine.
My data seems to be intact.

(Console works)
Too bad I can't give you guys a screenshot :( :(
-----------------------------------------------------------
[update]

I've managed to run KDE.
My data seems to be intact, however there are still problems with certain applications, which include:
-gaim ---> no graphics is displayed in this program (no icons etc)
-evolution ---> I'm not able to run this program at all.
-xfce4 ---> I tried installing another desktop, but xfce4 seems to have some similar problems concerning graphic files. Either it says it can't load them, or that they aren't there (for an example: icons in my /usr/share folder).
-KDE loads all graphics ok (except for the beforementioned programs like gaim and evolution).

A friend of mine suggested, that this may be due to a gtk failure, but GIMP works fine, so I don't really know.
I've searched in my /var/log/ and this is what I found:

maybe it's this? I'm a newb, so I totally stuck :(
I don't know what to reinstall, what to do - I don't want to loose my contacts from some gnome applications, any help would be greatly appreciated :)
-------------------

I'm also still wondering why the computer rebooted by itself rapidly :(
I had some system freezes before (usually while using azureus).
All memtests show that my RAM is ok
My power supply seems to be stable
Perhaps it's my CPU? or graphics card?
Seems that all my hardware is properly cooled (I've been playing doom3 without any problems, and it's been very stable).
Meh :(

Can you reboot in a single user mode?

Hi
I needed my computer urgently, so I had to reinstall the system.
I'm running a fresh sarge now, so I can't tell you anything.
I forgot about this topic since it went down in the forum.

From other forums I only got answers, that the problem is hardware related (power leak or something) and no solutions, so I did the only thing I could do.

Before that I had some occasional system freezes (caps lock and scroll lock flashing).
A friend of mine suggested that JAVA (intalled from the official source even) - used by azureus - may be behind this.

I don't know, I'm running a clean system now, and everything seems to be fine. So far :)

For future reference, it helps to have a separate /home partition. If you choose to reinstall, you can do so without disturbing /home. By doing this, all your good stuff is right where you want it.

It could very well be hardware-related, especially if there were random, system freezes.
If you are confident about messing with the hardware/peripherals, power off the system, unplug it, use a grounding strap, and carefully check all data/power connections, remove all the cards, make sure all wires and cables are good. If the problem persists, try replacing interface components such as mouse or keyboard.
I once fixed a system that kept crashing due to an intermittent short in the wires powering the cpu fan!
Good luck

I think I found the reason of my problems:
It turned out, my graphics card wasn't cooled properly - although I was surprised by this (it worked flawlessly in previous years, and it's passive cooling, which is supposed to don't demand any conservation). I understood it by a simple process of elimination. On some forums I even found out people had problems, freezes because of CDrom drives.
Well, now I put on some extra cooling on my card's ram and things are back to normal.
Torrents, games etc - other demanding programs don't crash and I have no freezes.

Thanks for advice bluedog. I patiently checked every part of my computer.
As for the gnome-error. It turns out to be a gnome - library bug. My friend had it after source-based linux compilation, when something went wrong. On my machine it was caused by the before-mentioned poweroff.
Well, let's hope things will get better now :)
